Africa’s First Elected Prime Minister: Lumumba’s Defiant Speech and Tragic End
On June 30, 1960, Patrice Lumumba stood before the King of Belgium and declared that Congolese independence was won by force and would never be forgotten. He vowed to make the Congo the pride of Africa, only to face a swift plot against his life.
