Lagos Police Deny Tear-Gassing Pensioners, Say Viral Protest Photo Is AI-Generated
The Lagos State Police Command has denied claims that officers fired tear gas at members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners during their protest in Alausa on August 31, 2026. Police said about 500 pensioners gathered peacefully at the Governor’s Office and Lagos State House of Assembly to demand outstanding pension adjustments and wage awards. The protesters were later addressed by the governor’s chief of staff, while union executives held a meeting with officials. According to the command, the gathering ended peacefully at about 4:30pm and no tear-gas canister was fired. It also described a widely circulated image purportedly showing the retirees being tear-gassed as AI-generated and urged the public not to share unverified claims.
