Why Ondo Must Prioritize Coastal Development for Sustainable Growth
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s recent media engagement showed a welcome commitment to transparency. He highlighted bitumen extraction and deep-sea port plans as key drivers of Ondo’s economic growth. Yet coastal communities in Ilaje face daily threats from erosion, sea incursion, and environmental degradation. These challenges endanger fishing, housing, and local livelihoods. A dedicated coastal management authority could address these issues. It would regulate waterways, protect ecosystems, and coordinate port-related projects. Progress on the Coastal Agency Management Bill remains crucial. Balancing large-scale investments with robust environmental safeguards will determine Ondo’s long-term success. Coastal residents must not be left behind if the state is to build an inclusive and resilient economy.
