Nigeria’s Ebola Virus Genetically Linked to Kenya Index Case, Pate Says
Nigeria’s health authorities say genomic analysis indicates that the Ebola virus detected in the country is closely related to the virus identified in Kenya’s index case. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, said the finding does not yet establish how the infection reached Nigeria. He said further evidence is needed to determine the route of transmission. Nigeria has recorded one confirmed case so far. Identified contacts have been traced and quarantined, while further tests are ongoing. The government says it has strengthened surveillance, laboratory testing, case management and infection-prevention measures. Health authorities urged Nigerians to remain calm, rely on verified public-health updates and report suspected cases. Ebola is spread through direct contact with infected body fluids, not through the air.
