Edo Cotton Seed Soup: A Traditional Delicacy Worth Preserving
In Edo State, cotton is not only grown for fabric. Cotton seeds are also used to make a rich traditional soup that has been passed down through generations. The seeds are thoroughly washed and processed to extract a creamy milk. This is cooked with a palm-fruit base, native herbs and spices, and proteins such as beef, kpomo, stockfish, smoked catfish and bushmeat. The ingredients can be sourced from local markets, including Egobaza market near the Edo–Ondo border. However, knowledge of the dish is becoming less common among younger people. Edo people, what is this soup called in your dialect? Have you tasted it, and which other Nigerian traditional dishes deserve to be preserved?
