IBB Says Wealthy Civilians Helped Fund Nigeria’s Successful Military Coups
Former military president Ibrahim Babangida says wealthy civilians played important roles in Nigeria’s successful military coups. He said no military takeover in the country’s history succeeded without some level of civilian involvement. Speaking in Minna ahead of his 85th birthday, Babangida also revisited the alleged 1985 coup plot that led to the execution of his longtime friend, Major General Mamman Vatsa. He said an inquiry cleared Major General Mohammed Gado Nasko but found evidence linking Vatsa to the plot. Babangida said he was devastated by Vatsa’s fate but could not intervene under the military justice system. Vatsa was executed by firing squad in March 1986. The former ruler also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful amid current economic and security challenges.
