Inside Nigeria’s Rapidly Growing Modern Slavery Crisis
In Ado-Ekiti, the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organization warns that modern slavery is surging across Africa. Three young Nigerian women—Abibat, Boluwatife and Zainab—were lured with fake job offers in Malaysia, trafficked to Mali and forced into prostitution under brutal debt bondage. GAHTO founder Prosper K. A. Michael highlights poverty and organized criminal networks as the root causes. He notes that Nigerians are also exploited in Egypt, Libya and Iraq for forced labor and sexual abuse. The organization is calling on government agencies, international partners and private donors to support urgent evacuation, rehabilitation programs and vocational training for survivors.
