UN Warns Terrorists in Northern Nigeria Use Drones and Crypto to Expand Operations

The United Nations has warned that terrorist groups in northern Nigeria and across the Sahel are increasingly deploying drones, advanced communications systems and cryptocurrencies to boost their cross-border operations. This alert was delivered during a Security Council briefing by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel. The official noted that armed groups now work closely with transnational crime networks to consolidate territorial and economic control, undermine public confidence in state institutions and inflict serious damage on social cohesion. Attacks, kidnappings and civilian casualties remain high in Nigeria, Niger and Burkina Faso, driving millions from their homes and creating a severe humanitarian crisis. He stressed that military action alone will not defeat terrorism. Governments must address underlying poverty and vulnerability to curb violent extremism. Despite funding shortages, regional cooperation has made progress, including the reopening of the Kamba border crossing and steps to implement the 2002 ICJ judgment on the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary.

Crypto networks might not be the main concern here; local funding and sympathizers could still be driving most operations on the ground.
