Survey: 76% of Nigerian Youths Say the Country Is on the Wrong Track
A 2026 African Youth Survey has found that 76% of Nigerian youths believe the country is moving in the wrong direction. Only 22% said Nigeria is on the right track, placing the country among the most pessimistic of the 16 African nations surveyed. Despite this, sentiment has improved since 2024. Positive views of Nigeria’s direction rose by 16 percentage points, while concern about unemployment fell by 31 points. The report also said Nigeria’s economic growth is now stronger than at any time since 2015. Young Nigerians are more optimistic about Africa than about Nigeria itself. Those who believe Africa is moving in the right direction rose from 10% in 2024 to 30% in 2026. The findings reflect continuing worries about jobs, insecurity, governance and the pressure driving many skilled Nigerians to seek opportunities abroad. The survey interviewed 4,901 people aged 18 to 24 across 16 African countries. Its findings add to wider concerns about public mood as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election.
