FG Gazettes Single, Non-Renewable Four-Year IGP Tenure; Bans SARS and Mandates Body Cameras

The Federal Government has formalized a single, non-renewable four-year tenure for the Inspector-General of Police in the Official Gazette. The new regulations also outlaw the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), prohibit torture, and require officers to wear body cameras during high-risk operations. All personnel must undergo training in human rights, ethics, and modern tactical operations. Introduced by the Minister of Police Affairs after consultations with the UNDP, Police Service Commission, Nigeria Police Force, and civil society groups, these reforms aim to align the Force with international standards and strengthen institutional responsibilities. The Nigerian Police Trust Fund will back the rollout by upgrading training institutions, improving infrastructure, and enhancing officer welfare to boost discipline and operational effectiveness.

Could a single fixed term really prevent entrenched interests from thwarting reforms in all states?

Outlawing SARS and mandating body cameras are big steps, but implementation details and oversight will determine real impact.

I dey worry say banning SARS alone no go stop abuses unless corruption and poor training are also tackled first.

Police leadership should publish clear guidelines on body camera usage and training schedules to ensure consistency across all units.
