Presidency Rejects Obi’s Clarification on Diaspora Remittance Remarks
The Presidency has dismissed Peter Obi’s clarification of his remarks to Nigerians in the United Kingdom about financial requests from relatives at home. At a town hall meeting in Manchester, Obi urged diaspora Nigerians to tell relatives asking for money to support leaders with records of financial discipline instead. He said poor leadership and corruption had pushed many Nigerians into depending on support from abroad. After criticism, Obi said he was not asking Nigerians in the diaspora to abandon their families. He acknowledged that remittances help many households cover school fees, healthcare, rent and other essentials, while arguing that Nigeria should provide jobs and basic services. Presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga rejected the clarification, saying Obi’s original statement had not been distorted. The exchange has fuelled fresh political debate ahead of the 2027 election.
