Nigeria’s 3.7M Displaced: 3,900 Camps Stretch Across the Country Amid Insecurity
Nigeria now hosts over 3.7 million internally displaced persons across nearly 3,900 camps and settlements. Data from the IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix, the National Bureau of Statistics and humanitarian agencies shows these figures shift frequently. Insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and farmer–herder clashes in the North-Central have driven mass displacement. States such as Borno, Zamfara, Benue and Taraba record the highest numbers of IDPs. Some states have closed camps through resettlement programmes, while others still grapple with overcrowding and scarce resources. Authorities are now shifting from emergency relief to durable solutions like permanent housing, farmland allocation and community reintegration.
