UK Minister’s Call to Increase Stops of Black Youths Sparks Debate

A senior minister faced questions over a knife attack in Belfast. She said she didn’t want to rush to judgment but noted reports naming a Somali or Sudanese suspect. She added that many would prefer an attack by a Brit rather than an undocumented immigrant. The minister then argued for ending the public sector equality duty. She claimed that special protections for disadvantaged groups were no longer needed now that everyone was “equal.” She insisted people should rely on common sense instead of legal safeguards. Her most controversial proposal was to increase police searches of young Black men. She said searches with any justification couldn’t be racist. She also dismissed calls for a Black police officers’ association, arguing that policing is colour-blind.

It's telling that she hesitated to rush judgment yet still highlighted immigrant backgrounds first, suggesting bias colors her approach.

I'm not convinced stopping more Black youths reduces crime; targeted checks often miss real threats and unfairly burden innocent people.

Police should invest in community outreach, build trust with young people, and rely on intelligence-led strategies instead of broad racial profiling.
