Why I Believe Governor Alia’s Suspension Does Not Affect His Role as Benue Governor
I believe the reported suspension of Governor Hyacinth Alia from priestly duties does not invalidate his position as the elected governor of Benue State. Under the Nigerian Constitution, elected executive office holders are expected to step away from paid private or professional roles while in office. In my view, this means Alia is required to focus on governing the state rather than carrying out priestly functions. The suspension concerns his ability to perform Catholic duties, such as celebrating Mass, and not his constitutional mandate as governor. I believe he can return to active priestly duties after completing his tenure in public office, subject to the Church’s rules.
