Jigawa State Launches Flood Preparedness Drive Ahead of Heavy Rains

Jigawa State Launches Flood Preparedness Drive Ahead of Heavy Rains

The National Orientation Agency has warned that heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in many parts of Jigawa State. Last year’s floods destroyed homes, farmlands and disrupted lives, so officials say urgent steps are needed. In Dutse, the NOA’s State Director outlined plans to deploy officers across all 27 local government areas. They will educate residents on clearing drains, responsible waste disposal, tree planting and other flood mitigation measures. Early weather alerts will guide these community efforts. The agency also reminded eligible citizens to take part in the ongoing INEC continuous voter registration. Officials raised concern over the commercial sale of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food, urging that it remain available only for severely malnourished children. Media and residents are called on to sustain awareness campaigns.

When you say support, are there specific tasks or skills local groups should prioritise?

I notice flooding warnings come up every year, but actual relief measures seem slow to reach rural areas.

I'm not convinced the outlined plans will reach remote communities without detailed logistics from the NOA.

Communities might set up local watch teams and share rain gauge data so warnings reach everyone before floodwaters rise.
