Impunity and Abuse: The Case of Asma Jattak Highlights Violence Against Women in Pakistan

Impunity and Abuse: The Case of Asma Jattak Highlights Violence Against Women in Pakistan

Over 24,000 abductions and kidnappings, more than 2,000 domestic violence cases, 500 honor killings, and over 5,000 rapes were reported in Pakistan in 2024. Yet conviction rates remain below 2 percent. In February, armed men tied to a powerful tribal chief abducted Asma Jattak in Balochistan. Her family’s three-day highway protest and a social media outcry forced her release, but the main suspect still walks free. This episode underscores how influential sardars and their private militias evade justice, torturing and executing women without fear of punishment. Law enforcement steps in only under public pressure, and true accountability is nearly non-existent. Despite recent pro-women legal reforms, weak implementation leaves many cases unreported or unresolved. Structural changes and strict enforcement are essential to protect women and uphold the rule of law.
