Healthy-Looking Chicks Can Still Spread Germs to Children
Chickens and ducks can carry germs such as Salmonella even when they look clean, active and healthy. These germs may be on their feathers, feet, eggs, cages, feeders, drinkers and the ground around the coop. Children can become sick if they touch birds or poultry equipment and then put their hands near their mouths or food. Make handwashing with soap and running water compulsory after handling birds, collecting eggs or touching anything in the poultry area. Adults should supervise young children and discourage them from kissing or cuddling chicks. Keep poultry supplies, dedicated footwear and birds away from kitchens and food-preparation areas. If anyone develops diarrhoea, fever or stomach cramps after poultry contact, seek medical advice and mention the exposure. Where is the best place for your family handwashing point: beside the coop, at the back door or inside the house?
