Anambra Reports 15% Unmet Family-Planning Need, Expands Contraceptive Access
The Anambra State Government says 15 per cent of married women aged 15 to 49 in the state have an unmet need for family planning, citing the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. At a World Contraception Day event in Awka, health officials said access must include accurate information, confidential counselling and a choice of safe family-planning methods. They identified misinformation, fear of side effects, stigma, distance to health facilities and provider bias as key barriers. The state said 146,183 clients received family-planning counselling in 2025, while 44,615 were new users. From January to June 2026, 73,687 clients were counselled and 18,389 new users were recorded, alongside services including injectables, implants, intrauterine devices and condoms. Officials urged healthcare workers, community leaders and the media to counter myths, including false claims that contraception causes infertility or is equivalent to abortion.
