Golf: How the Course, Rules and Major Tournaments Work

Golf is played on courses with nine or 18 holes. Each hole begins at a teeing ground and ends at a cup on the putting green. Players must navigate fairways, rough grass and hazards such as water, rocks and sand bunkers. The aim is to complete a round in the fewest strokes. In stroke play, the player with the lowest total number of strokes wins. In match play, players or teams compete to win the most individual holes. Modern golf developed in 15th-century Scotland. The 18-hole format was established at St Andrews in 1764. Its oldest major tournament is The Open Championship, first held in 1860, alongside the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA Championship.
