Ibadan Premiere of ‘The Throne of Alaafin Oyo’ Suspended After Filmmaker Alleges Death Threat
Award-winning documentarian Ayankola Ayanwuyi has indefinitely postponed the Ibadan screening of his cultural film ‘The Throne of Alaafin Oyo’ citing security concerns. He claims the Alaafin of Oyo personally threatened to kill him for producing a film honouring the throne of his forebears. Ayanwuyi says he formally informed the Alaafin’s palace before scheduling the April premiere. The 45-minute documentary examines the transition from Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III to the current Alaafin, exploring traditional rites, kingship processes and ancestral lineage within Yoruba history. Physical showings planned in Lagos, Ibadan, Oyo and Ogbomoso throughout April are now on hold. A private Lagos preview last weekend drew historians and cultural advocates for an interactive session on the film’s insights into Yoruba heritage. The postponement has ignited debate over artistic freedom and respect for traditional institutions. The Alaafin’s palace has yet to respond to the allegations, raising wider questions about creative safety when engaging with powerful cultural figures.
