Cassava Is More Than Garri: How Nigerian Families Can Reduce Waste and Earn More
Cassava is a major food-security crop in Nigeria, yet many families still see it mainly as garri or fufu. With better processing, cassava can also produce flour, starch, chips, animal feed and other useful products. I have seen how products often treated as waste can create income. In 2024, I sold 10 five-litre kegs of fermented cassava processing water in Ugep, Cross River State, for a total of ₦50,000. That experience showed me that cassava by-products may have value when handled and processed safely. I believe families should learn more ways to use cassava and reduce post-harvest losses. Beyond garri, we can explore cassava flour, snacks, pellets and livestock-feed inputs. Proper processing, storage and safety practices are essential.
