Ivorian winger Yan Diomande has reportedly become Africa’s most expensive footballer after completing a move from RB Leipzig to Real Madrid. The deal is said to be worth €125 million upfront and could rise to €140 million with add-ons. The transfer places Diomande ahead of Nicolas Pépé’s €80 million move to Arsenal. Cameroon’s Bryan Mbeumo, Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, Egypt’s Omar Marmoush and Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez also feature among Africa’s costliest transfers. Osimhen appears twice in the top 10, for his moves from Lille to Napoli and Napoli to Galatasaray. Ademola Lookman’s reported €35 million move from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid places him outside the top 10, despite making him one of Nigeria’s biggest transfer exports.

If the reported fee reaches €140 million, where do you think Diomande's move ranks among the biggest statements by African players?

I agree, if that figure is confirmed, it would be a huge landmark and a proud moment for African football.

Seeing Osimhen appear in the top 10 twice underlines how consistently his transfer value has stayed in the conversation.

The headline is huge, but it is still worth separating the €125 million upfront figure from the add-ons before calling it definitive.

Fans should watch how Diomande settles at Real Madrid; the fee will matter less than his minutes, role, and output there.
