Three of the World’s Most Repressive Countries and Why They Rank So Poorly
North Korea, Eritrea and Afghanistan are widely regarded as among the world’s most repressive countries. Human rights monitors and press-freedom groups have documented severe restrictions on civil liberties, political dissent and access to independent information. North Korea operates under tight state control, with reports of political prison camps, forced labour, arbitrary detention and harsh punishment for dissent. Citizens have little freedom of expression, movement, assembly or religion, while access to foreign media is heavily restricted. Eritrea is regularly ranked among the worst countries for press freedom because independent media is almost absent and journalists face detention. Afghanistan has also suffered a sharp decline in rights and political freedoms, particularly since the Taliban returned to power. These rankings measure different issues, but all three countries face serious criticism over repression and human rights abuses.
