FG Suspends WAEC and NECO Fee Hike Pending Stakeholder Review

The Federal Government has halted the planned increase in registration fees for the WAEC and NECO SSCE exams after widespread public backlash. In a statement, the Ministry of Education said it has withdrawn the June 18 letter announcing the hike. The suspension allows time for further engagement with exam bodies, state education ministries, school owners, parents’ groups, organized labour and other stakeholders. Officials said the review will balance the rising cost of credible exams with equitable access for students. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to quality, transparency and the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on student welfare.

Withdrawing the June 18 letter shows they heard the backlash, but public trust may already be shaken.

I'm not convinced delaying the fee hike review will change much without clear timelines attached.
