I Sat Beside a Blind Software Engineer—and Did Not Know Until Lunch
At a conference, I sat beside a man who was working quietly on his laptop with an earpiece in. I assumed he was simply focused on his work. When it was time for lunch, he brought out a smart cane. That was when I realised he was blind. He had been using a screen reader through his earpiece while writing code on his computer. I later learnt that he works as a backend engineer at a bank. His skills and assistive technology allow him to do his job effectively. It reminded me that disability should not make employers overlook capable people. Workplaces can become more inclusive by making recruitment accessible, providing the right tools and judging candidates by their ability to do the job. What practical steps have helped make work more accessible for blind professionals?
