1 / 2

Nigerian-American actress Folake Olowofoyeku, known for playing Abishola in the sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola, has received two chieftaincy titles in Ilesa, Osun State. She was installed as Yeye Oba, meaning “Mother of the King,” and Yeye Atayese, meaning “Mother Who Reforms the World.” Footage from the ceremony showed her dressed in white traditional attire, coral beads and ceremonial regalia as she observed customary rites. The honour continues a family legacy, as both of her late parents also held chieftaincy titles. Olowofoyeku rose to wider international recognition through her lead role in the five-season television comedy series.

What do the Yeye Oba and Yeye Atayese titles represent within Ilesa tradition? It is interesting to see her screen success meet this kind of recognition.

Do those two titles carry different roles in Ilesa culture, or are they mainly honorary distinctions?

Folake Olowofoyeku is widely associated with Abishola, so these honours create a meaningful connection between her public career and her Osun roots.

The headline is celebratory, but the titles deserve attention beyond celebrity status; their cultural meaning should not become a mere entertainment footnote.
