FIFA Leadership Reaffirms Support for Infantino After World Cup Stake Controversy

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has retained the backing of the organisation’s senior leadership after a crisis meeting in Sale, Morocco. The meeting followed reports of a proposed $4.2 billion plan to sell a 20 per cent commercial stake in the World Cup through a FIFA subsidiary. The proposal was later withdrawn after internal objections from officials who said they were not consulted. In a joint statement, FIFA’s secretary general and management board members reaffirmed their support for Infantino while acknowledging that the process was mishandled. However, UEFA officials and former Portugal captain Luis Figo have continued to call for Infantino to resign ahead of FIFA’s March election.
