Nigerian Medical Student Adaobi Nnani Dies After Kharkiv Attack Days Before Graduation

Adaobi Nnani Marian, a 23-year-old Nigerian final-year medical student at Kharkiv National Medical University, has died from injuries sustained during a June 29 attack in Kharkiv, Ukraine. She was reportedly injured alongside her Azerbaijani friend, Fatima Huseynova, who died at the scene. Adaobi underwent an amputation and spent five days in a coma before she was transferred through Poland to a hospital in Germany. She died on July 5, only days before she was expected to graduate after six years of medical training. Kharkiv National Medical University and the regional prosecutor’s office said doctors fought to save her life in Ukraine and Germany. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is working with its missions in Kyiv and Berlin to support her family and establish the full circumstances of her death. The Russian Embassy in Nigeria offered condolences but denied responsibility, saying there was no confirmed information on what caused her death. Ukrainian authorities have attributed the attack to Russian forces. Adaobi’s death has renewed concern over the safety of Nigerian students caught in the war.
