ICRC Reports 18% Rise in Malnutrition Cases Across Northeast Nigeria
Malnutrition admissions at health facilities supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross in Northeast Nigeria rose by 18% between January and September 2026. The ICRC recorded nearly 20,000 admissions during the period, up from about 17,000 in the corresponding months of 2025. Young children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are among those most affected. In Mubi, Adamawa State, admissions rose by almost 24%, from about 4,600 to 5,700 cases. The ICRC linked the worsening situation to conflict, climate shocks and economic pressure, which continue to limit families’ access to food and healthcare. The figures cover six health centres and four hospitals supported by the organisation, underscoring the urgent need for nutrition treatment and food support in vulnerable communities.
