WAEC 2026 Crisis: Education Ministry Pushes NECO as Alternative, Orders Review
The Federal Ministry of Education says it will strengthen NECO as a major alternative to WAEC following widespread complaints over the handling of the 2026 WASSCE results. After meeting with private-school proprietors, the Ministry said it would not immediately launch an independent investigation into WAEC. It explained that Nigeria has limited control over WAEC because it is jointly managed by West African countries, unlike NECO, which is under the Federal Government. A committee has been set up to align examination timetables, reduce registration burdens on schools and ensure results are released early enough for admissions. JAMB has also extended CAPS access for affected candidates to upload NECO results for the 2025/2026 admission cycle. WAEC has agreed to remark disputed scripts free of charge, although most of the 28 schools that participated reported no score changes. The Ministry also wants WAEC to improve direct access to results and address concerns about withheld results, declining performance in some subjects and examination malpractice.
