James Trafford Says Man City Bench Spell Took a Toll on His Mental Wellbeing
Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford says losing his starting place at Manchester City left him frustrated and affected his mental wellbeing. He started the club’s first three Premier League matches after returning from Burnley, but was later dropped when City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain. Trafford eventually left City for Leeds in a deal worth up to £45 million. He said regular playing time was important for his career and that sitting out matches made him feel as if he was losing himself. In an interview with the BBC, Trafford said he often called family and friends to talk through the disappointment. Despite feeling unwanted at times, he said he was grateful for his experience under Pep Guardiola.
