Fiji Declares National Health Emergency Over Rapid Rise in HIV Cases

Fiji has declared a national health emergency after a sharp rise in HIV infections, linked partly to increased injectable drug use. Health authorities estimate that one in every 60 adults is now living with HIV, compared with one in 167 five years ago. The country recorded 2,060 new diagnoses in 2025. Of an estimated 9,100 people living with HIV, only 39% know their status and 22% are receiving antiretroviral treatment. The government plans to introduce a syringe and needle programme, subject to legislative changes, and has urged residents to get tested without fear of stigma or discrimination. UNAIDS says new infections in Fiji rose 12-fold between 2010 and 2025.
