Tinubu’s Refinery Reset Raises Questions Over Billions Spent on Rehabilitation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s call for a reset of Nigeria’s government-owned refineries raises serious questions about the billions reportedly spent on their rehabilitation. Nigerians were repeatedly told that the Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna refineries had been revived and would return to production. There were also claims that refined products from Port Harcourt were being exported. If the rehabilitation was successful, why is another major intervention now being presented as necessary? Technical setbacks can happen, but Nigerians deserve clear answers. The government should publish audited expenditure, production volumes, revenues, product destinations and verifiable evidence of any exports. It should also explain who approved the earlier spending and who certified that the refinery was operational. A reset should not become a substitute for accountability. Nigeria needs functioning refineries, transparent records and consequences where public funds were wasted or earlier claims were inaccurate.
