Alaafin Says Oyo’s History Makes Him Yorubaland’s Foremost Monarch
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, says the historical influence of the old Oyo Empire makes his throne the foremost in Yorubaland. In an interview, he said he was not competing with other traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, and believes Oyo’s progress benefits Yoruba people as a whole. His remarks follow a dispute last year over the Ooni’s conferment of the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title on businessman Dotun Sanusi. The Alaafin had challenged the conferment and called on the Ooni to revoke it, while the Ooni’s spokesperson said the monarch would not issue an official response.
