DSS Move to Delay Sowore Case Raises Questions About Free Speech and Public Funds

The reported move by the Department of State Services to seek an adjournment of its case against Omoyele Sowore until after the 16 January 2027 presidential election raises serious questions. If the case could affect his participation as a candidate, I believe the DSS should have considered that before commencing the prosecution. In my view, prosecuting a citizen over harsh criticism of the President was unnecessary from the start. Public officials must be open to scrutiny, including criticism that is unpleasant or provocative. The DSS should focus on genuine threats to national security rather than political insults or complaints about governance. The case also raises questions about taxpayer money spent on investigations, court appearances and legal filings. If the matter can be paused until after the election, Nigerians are entitled to ask why those resources were committed in the first place. I believe the DSS should apologise to Sowore and reflect on the wider danger of treating political dissent as criminality. Nigerians have a constitutional right to criticise poor governance at federal, state and local levels.
