New Study Links Two UK Heatwaves to Nearly 2,700 Deaths
Researchers from leading UK institutions estimate that around 2,700 people may have died from heat-related causes during two intense heatwaves in England and Wales. The first spike between May 21 and 29 is linked to about 550 deaths, while a more severe spell from June 18 to 28 may have claimed nearly 2,200 lives. Experts warn that record temperatures—reaching 35.1°C in May and 37.7°C in June—arrived unusually early, giving communities and services little time to prepare. The UK Health Security Agency will publish an official death toll after reviewing registered fatalities. The study suggests human-driven climate change raised daytime temperatures by 3–4°C during these events, putting older adults, people with health conditions and those in poorly ventilated homes at greatest risk.
