Did Movies Give Us Unrealistic Expectations of Love?
Growing up, films like Titanic and classic Nollywood romances made love look simple and absolute. They taught many of us to expect a person who would choose us above money, family pressure, status and every hardship. As I have grown older, I have realised that real relationships are far more complicated. Love must contend with finances, values, ambition, family expectations, sacrifice and the daily work of choosing each other. People can change when circumstances change. Some couples survive difficult seasons, while others drift apart despite the feelings they once had. Marriage is not always the fairy tale films promised us. Still, I believe genuine love may exist in a quieter form: two imperfect people showing up for each other through life’s uncertainties. Do you think movies misled us about love, or does true love still exist?
