Are Some Nigerians Becoming Pastors for Status and Money?
In Nigeria, titles such as chief, honourable, comrade and pastor can attract respect. But this raises an important question: are some people becoming pastors to serve God and their communities, or mainly for status, influence and financial rewards? The concern is not about every pastor. However, some religious leaders are accused of dishonesty, gossip, rivalry over church positions, poor temper, flirtatious behaviour, debt and excessive interest in offerings. Such behaviour can contradict the moral example expected of a spiritual leader. Faith should not become a cover for emotional manipulation or personal enrichment. People who lead congregations should be clear about their purpose, accountable in their conduct and honest about how money is handled. Being born again should be a lasting way of life, not a title or business strategy. What do you think should distinguish a genuine pastor from someone merely performing the role?
