Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Named 2025 Legislator of the Year at Independent Newspaper Silver Jubilee
Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of Cross River South was honoured as Legislator of the Year 2025 during the Independent Newspaper’s 25th anniversary awards. The accolade recognises his outstanding performance in the 10th Senate. Unable to attend in person, he was represented by his wife at the ceremony while participating in the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Türkiye. In his acceptance message, he thanked President Tinubu, Senate leadership and Governor Bassey Otu for their support, and dedicated the award to his constituents. Since taking office in 2023, he has sponsored 21 bills and moved eight motions on healthcare, education, infrastructure, youth empowerment and more. His signature South-South Development Commission Act has become law, and he secured a federal technology university for Cross River. At home, he has overseen solar streetlights, boreholes and a free bus scheme delivering over half a million rides. “Leadership is not measured by titles or awards,” he reflected. “It is measured by the lives we touch, the hope we sustain, and the future we help shape.”
