Can a Stronger NGX Reduce Nigeria’s Dependence on Foreign Investors?

Do Nigeria really need foreign investors? If the need is mainly for capital, I believe much of the funding for viable ventures can be raised through the Nigerian Exchange (NGX). A stronger market would allow Nigerians and foreign investors to compete openly for shares in local companies. Foreign investors may still be valuable where they bring technical expertise, technology and strategic partnerships. Such partners can also invest through the NGX rather than relying only on private arrangements. The stock exchange can be a powerful tool for economic growth when businesses regularly seek public funding. I believe listed companies should be required to pay shareholders whenever they can afford to pay workers. This could improve accountability, help investors value companies more confidently and strengthen trust in the market.
