Nigerian Teachers Can Apply for $1m Global Teacher Prize Before October 12
Nigerian teachers have until October 12, 2026, to apply or be nominated for the 2027 GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize. The $1 million award recognises educators whose work has made a measurable difference to learners and communities. The competition is open to teachers with at least five years’ experience working with learners aged four to 18. Digital educators, leaders of education programmes, and teachers in refugee or other non-formal learning settings are now eligible. Part-time, contract and self-employed educators may also qualify. Applicants will be assessed on teaching impact, innovation, learning outcomes and contributions to their communities. Nigeria was represented among the 2026 finalists, including Lagos-based Biology teacher Adeola Olufunke Akinsulure, whose work covers STEM education, girls’ empowerment and environmental learning. The 2027 process will produce a Top 50 shortlist and 10 finalists before the winner is selected by the Global Teacher Prize Academy.
