Anambra State Launches Plea Bargain Scheme, Excludes Violent Crimes
The Anambra State Government has approved a broad plea bargain offer for all suspects facing criminal trials, excluding cases of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and rape. In a statement dated 22 July 2026, the Attorney General of Anambra State, Tobechukwu Nweke SAN, directed all state prosecutors to provide prescribed plea bargain forms to defendants before taking their plea. This discretionary move aims to decongest correctional centres and courts, and aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s ongoing criminal justice reforms. Under the scheme, defendants who plead guilty may receive reduced sentences, marking the first time a Nigerian state has offered such wide-ranging relief to criminal suspects.
