Newborn, Parents Escape as Fallen High-Tension Line Sparks Fire in Ilorin
A couple and their newborn baby escaped unharmed after a fire damaged their apartment and nearby properties in Ilorin, Kwara State, in the early hours of Tuesday. The Kwara State Fire Service said a concrete pole carrying a 33kV transmission line collapsed on Lawyer Lambo Street in Oloje Phase 2, Ilorin West. Sparks from the fallen line reportedly ignited a vehicle tyre and spread quickly to nearby buildings. The fire affected three buildings, a travel office and a vulcanising workshop. One vehicle and the workshop were destroyed, while firefighters saved two other vehicles. Electrical appliances, batteries and solar equipment were also damaged. Firefighters contacted the electricity distribution company to shut down power to the area. Residents have been advised to keep buildings and shops away from high-tension lines and report damaged poles or exposed wires immediately.
