Mohbad Death: Coroner Rules Out Homicide, Cites Medical Negligence
Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known as Mohbad, died on 12 September 2023 at age 27. His death sparked nationwide outrage and questions over his treatment, burial and claims of intimidation before he died. After his body was exhumed, police investigations and a Lagos State Coroner’s Inquest examined the circumstances of his death. Although Naira Marley, Sam Larry and others featured in public discussions, the proceedings did not establish that they caused his death. In its final findings on 11 July 2025, the Coroner ruled out homicide and foul play. The court cited serious medical negligence in Mohbad’s treatment after an injury and recommended the prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe for alleged unlawful medical practice and gross negligence. The Coroner said the state of Mohbad’s remains prevented a completely certain medical conclusion on the cause of death. It also recommended further investigation into his earlier allegations of assault and intimidation.
