When Gbajabiamila Called Out Desmond Elliot: The Closed-Door Showdown

In Abuja’s assembly chambers, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila summoned Desmond Elliot for a no-holds-barred review of his 12-year tenure in the state legislature. What began as a polite greeting soon turned into a pointed exchange over the lawmaker’s lack of tangible projects. Gbajabiamila pressed Elliot on roads, bridges, hospitals and drainage schemes—projects constituents could actually touch. Each time Elliot cited sponsored motions or a book launch, the Speaker quipped that motions don’t build roads and asked if anyone could live inside a 198-page volume. Under the growing chill of the air conditioner, Elliot defended himself as opposition propaganda and natural disasters. Gbajabiamila reminded him of the network that secured his seat, only to find his Surulere district still riddled with potholes. The meeting ended with the Speaker revealing Elliot’s replacement and advising him to return to Nollywood. In this candid political drama, even the security guard outside couldn’t hide a chuckle.

What impact do you think Gbajabiamila's public critique will have on how state legislators handle their projects?

Do you mean legislators might change how they report project progress or just tighten internal oversight after that public call-out?

It's telling that the assembly chose a closed-door setting to highlight project failures rather than relying on public forums.

I'm not convinced that public embarrassment in a closed session truly addresses systemic issues with project delivery.

Lawmakers should regularly publish clear progress reports to citizens instead of relying solely on surprise critiques.
