Alarming Rise in Gombe: NHRC Logs 287 Rights Violations in First Half of Year
Between January and June, the National Human Rights Commission recorded 287 rights violations in Gombe State. Dr Joseph Wanshe, the NHRC state coordinator, said 215 incidents involved women and children’s rights abuses, domestic violence, rape and degrading treatment. There were 43 civil and political rights cases, 23 economic, social and cultural violations, and six environmental complaints. About 230 of the complaints have been resolved through alternative dispute resolution, with ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance. The rise in reports reflects over 50 sensitisation programmes across radio, television, schools and markets, as well as a recent internal restructuring of the NHRC office. Wanshe praised support from government agencies, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, and urged residents to report abuses free of charge. Compared to 285 complaints in all of 2025, 287 cases in just six months show a significant boost in tackling human rights issues.
