Uzodimma Explains Silence as 20 Abducted NYSC Prospective Members Regain Freedom in Imo
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma says authorities withheld details of the operation to rescue 20 prospective NYSC members and another passenger because public disclosure could have endangered them. The victims were abducted on October 1 after gunmen attacked two buses near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area. The buses were carrying prospective corps members from Ibadan to orientation camps in the South-East and South-South. After six days in captivity, the victims were freed following a joint operation involving the police, military, DSS and other security agencies. Drones reportedly helped locate a suspected kidnappers’ hideout, but a ground assault was delayed over fears that the area had been rigged with improvised explosive devices. The freed victims were taken to the DSS Hospital in Owerri for medical care. Uzodimma praised the security agencies and the Imo and Oyo state governments for their roles in the rescue effort.
