Bishop Says Insurgency Destroyed Over 200 Catholic Churches in Maiduguri Diocese
The Auxiliary Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese, Most Rev. John Bakeni, says more than 200 Catholic churches have been destroyed during years of insurgency in the North-East. He said thousands of people, including Christians and Muslims, were killed, while many others were displaced from their communities. Speaking at a thanksgiving Mass in Osogbo, Bakeni said intensified attacks in 2014 forced many Catholics to flee. He added that the violence affected people across religious communities, not only Christians. The bishop said the diocese has continued to hold worship services despite insecurity and appealed for prayers for communities affected by violence. He also urged Nigerians to protect peace and avoid actions that could fuel conflict.
