How Jesus Miraculously Secured the Temple Tax
In Matthew 17:24–27, temple tax collectors question Peter about whether Jesus pays the required tax. Jesus asks Peter whether a king’s children or outsiders pay duties. When Peter replies that outsiders pay, Jesus points out that His own “children” are exempt. To avoid offence, Jesus tells Peter to cast a line into the lake. The first fish he catches will have a four-drachma coin in its mouth. Peter is then to use that coin to pay both taxes on their behalf.
