Graduate Tears Certificates in Frustration Over Nigeria’s Job Market
A Nigerian graduate has gone viral after a video showed him tearing documents he identified as his university degree, NYSC discharge certificate and WAEC result. He said he regretted spending years in school after graduating with a second-class upper degree in Psychology, arguing that the certificates had not delivered the opportunities he expected. At one point, he said he would rather be called an illiterate. The video has revived debate over unemployment and underemployment among Nigerian graduates. While some viewers sympathised with his frustration, others questioned whether destroying the documents would solve the problem and noted that some of the papers appeared to be photocopies.
